TMJ Treatment Options
When preparing for TMJ treatment, the process begins with a complete examination of your oral and facial structures (i.e., jaw, teeth, tissues, bones, etc.). We will use digital X-rays as well as our cone beam scanner to get a high-resolution image of the jaw joints, allowing us to determine the severity of the problem.
Once we have a clear understanding of how best to treat the issue, we will craft a personalized treatment plan that includes either occlusal adjustment/equilibration or a customized occlusal splint. Dr. Mularczyk will go over the options with you and explain which one is best for your unique case.
With occlusal adjustment/equilibration, we will address your misaligned bite. This can often occur when a dental restoration causes uneven pressure on your TMJs. Our team will alter your filling or restorations so that a more even bite force is created, and your jaw joints and muscles can relax.
If teeth grinding (bruxism) is the problem, we will have a customized occlusal splint crafted so that it prevents your teeth from touching and shifts your jaw slightly forward. This reduces any pressure on your jaw joints, so they rest more comfortably in the proper position.
